Cattle Markets Volatile As Of Late

A market analyst with Canfax says the cattle markets have been pretty volatile over the last few weeks.

Brian Perillat notes markets have been trying to anticipate some large cattle numbers on the fed cattle side, noting fed cattle prices in the U.S. and Canada have been seeing some big declines.

He talked about what the effect the dry weather has been having.

"The feeder market has been a little bit on the defensive as of late, obviously with the pullback in the fed cattle supplies. Feedlots were making money for the most part but some of these prices are at losses. There's a bunch of things weighing in on the feeder cattle market. Weather and feed costs are certainly a part of that. So far, I'm not sure weather has been a big issue yet, but we're certainly watching it as guys are definitely going to need some moisture for grass and then get the feed grain grown and started."

Cleaning Sheep Barns & Setting Up Chutes

Video: Cleaning Sheep Barns & Setting Up Chutes

Indoor sheep farming in winter at pre-lambing time requires that, at Ewetopia Farms, we need to clean out the barns and manure in order to keep the sheep pens clean, dry and fresh for the pregnant ewes to stay healthy while indoors in confinement. In today’s vlog, we put fresh bedding into all of the barns and we remove manure from the first groups of ewes due to lamb so that they are all ready for lambs being born in the next few days. Also, in preparation for lambing, we moved one of the sorting chutes to the Coveralls with the replacement ewe lambs. This allows us to do sorting and vaccines more easily with them while the barnyard is snow covered and hard to move sheep safely around in. Additionally, it frees up space for the second groups of pregnant ewes where the chute was initially.
