On Sunday producers across the province will be opening the farm gates for consumers to learn more about where their food comes from. September 18 is Open Farm Day, an annual event that showcases farms, ranches, research centres, and historical sites in Manitoba.
This year's event has a total of 44 sites, including dairy farms, grain farms, cattle ranches, and museums.
"Up in The Pas, we have one farm that is a bison and honey farm, in the southeast corner we have six dairies in total participating, we have orchards, we have the... Bruce Campbell Discovery Centre as well as the University of Manitoba Glenlea," says coordinator Wendy Bulloch.
She says the purpose of Open Farm Day is to showcase the importance and diversity of agriculture in Manitoba.
"Some of us are more than one generation removed from the farm or from agriculture, so it's an opportunity for people to understand what happens on a farm. Also, to get a bit of background on how things have changed and the whole role of technology," she says. "I guess the biggest thing we like to propose or support is the whole issue of science and basing agriculture on science and modern agriculture."
