Similar Issues Facing Canadian And US Pork Producers

Transparency is an issue for pork producers on both sides of the border.

That from Pat McGonegle, CEO of the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

He was part of a US contingent that attended Manitoba Pork's annual meeting earlier this month.

McGonegle said foreign animal disease is also a big concern.

"Both Canada and the US have extensive export marketing efforts," he commented. "In the US we're roughly about 25 per cent of our production. I think Canada is a little bit more than that. So anytime you have that kind of market situation, you have to be prepared in the event that you've got foreign animal disease and you'd have to shut off exports."

World Pork Expo: Tackling oxidative stress at critical stages in swine production

Video: World Pork Expo: Tackling oxidative stress at critical stages in swine production

Dr. Marlin Hoogland, veterinarian and Director of Innovation and Research at Feedworks, speaks to The Pig Site's Sarah Mikesell just after World Pork Expo about how metabolic imbalance – especially during weaning, late gestation and disease outbreaks – can quietly undermine animal health and farm profitability.

In swine production, oxidative stress may be an invisible challenge, but its effects are far from subtle. From decreased feed efficiency to suppressed growth rates, it quietly chips away at productivity.

Dr. Hoogland says producers and veterinarians alike should be on alert for this metabolic imbalance, especially during the most physiologically demanding times in a pig’s life.
