Winter Arrives On The Prairies

Colder temperatures and snow have made their way across the Prairies.

Senior Agricultural Meteorologist with World Weather Inc. Drew Lerner says it appears winter is here to stay.

"It certainly does look as though winter is here for a while. Unfortunately, I think we're done with the warm air. It looks like the next week will likely generate a rather steady diet of normal to below normal temperatures across the region and we do have a bunch of snow that's going to pile up across the Prairies."

Lerner says this year will be a La Niña winter, which means we could be in for some colder temperatures.

He notes much of Manitoba is still suffering from drier soil conditions, which could create some problems in the spring.

Video: Grazing Network Group: What it is and how it benefits our operation

In the spring of 2023 OMAFA, along with the University of Guelph, gathered a group of 18 producers from the beef, sheep, and dairy sectors to support a three to four year research project related to measuring grass growth in Ontario. The producers use a Rising Plate Meter to capture grass growth and record livestock movements. This presentation will explain how the group interact/support one another, some initial findings, as well as the benefits for the research team and our farm.

The purpose of the Profitable Pastures conference is to bring fresh ideas and new research results to Ontario grazing managers across the ruminant livestock sectors. These conferences have a major focus on pasture management
