Canada's Oat Production Down 43 Per Cent In 2021

Statistic Canada's latest crop production report released Friday revealed that total oat production decreased by 43 per cent nationally to 2.6 million tonnes.

Jon Driedger is vice president with LeftField Commodity Research.

"The oat crop is small and a little bit lower quality overall as the heat stressed the crops, so maybe a little lighter on the bushel weight," he said. "Those top quality oats, it's just incredible. Again, small production number inline with expectations but affirming just how incredibly tight that oat market is and prices are showing that. Just unbelievable."

Harvested oat acres were down 15.4 per cent to 2.7 million, while yields dropped 32.6 per cent to 61.5 bushels per acre.
