Integrated Management Strategy Best Way To Fight Root Rot In Soybeans

With the recent rise in soybean acres, diseases such as phytophthora root rot have also expanded throughout the province.

That from Dr. Debra McLaren of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, who spoke about the issue last month at the Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers crop production meeting in Brandon.

She talked about the best ways to manage the disease.

"The most important thing is to have an integrated management strategy," explained McLaren. "You're looking at seed treatment to cover the short period of time where the seedlings aren't protected, if you just have a variety that has partial resistance. If you have a field where you've had phytophthora before, you know the race is there, then choose a variety with a resistance gene."
