Planning Continues For Next Ag Policy Framework

The government's current agricultural policy framework, Growing Forward 2, is coming to a close.

The five-year, $3 billion program expires at the end of March 2018.

Planning on the next framework is currently underway, with negotiations taking place surrounding the multi-lateral agreement between the provinces, territories and the federal government. The multi-lateral agreement is expected to be finalized this summer, with bi-lateral agreements between the provinces and the federal government expected to be completed this fall.

Mike Lesiuk, director of policy with Manitoba Agriculture, gave farmers an update at Keystone Agricultural Producers' Spring Advisory Council Meeting last week in Portage la Prairie.

He reveals some of the feedback they've been getting from the different commodity organizations and food processing groups.

"On the business risk management side, we hear ongoing strong support for the AgriInsurance programs," explained Lesiuk. "There's always room for some areas to be tweaked; but AgriStability and AgriInvest, the industry is asking for reinstatement of the previous levels of funding to it."

?? The Multi-Plant System Processing 20 Million Hogs Annually in the Midwest JBS USA operates multiple large-scale pork processing facilities across the Midwest, including major plants in Iowa, Minnesota, and Indiana. Combined, these facilities have the capacity to process approximately 20 million hogs annually.

Each plant operates high-speed automated slaughter systems capable of processing up to 20,000 head per day, followed by fabrication lines that break carcasses into primals, sub-primals, and case-ready retail products.

Hog procurement is coordinated through electronic marketing platforms that connect regional contract finishing operations and independent producers to plant demand schedules. This digital procurement system allows for steady supply flow and scheduling efficiency across multiple facilities.

Processing plants incorporate comprehensive food safety systems, including pathogen intervention technologies, rapid chilling processes, and integrated cold-chain management. USDA inspection is embedded throughout the harvest and fabrication stages to ensure regulatory compliance and product integrity. Finished pork products — from bulk primals to retail-ready packaged cuts — are distributed through coordinated logistics networks serving domestic and export markets.
